NCSoft introduces Horizon Steel Frontiers — an MMORPG based on one of PlayStation's flagship franchises
Finally, the Korean company NCSoft — the author of Guild Wars and Lineage — introduced a multiplayer role-playing game in the Horizon universe, which has long been rumored.
What is known
The game is titled Horizon Steel Frontiers and is being developed in collaboration with PlayStation Studios and the creators of the Horizon franchise from Guerrilla Games, but the release is announced for PC and mobile devices with iOS and Android without PlayStation 5. It is possible that a console version will be announced in the future.
Stylistically, Steel Frontiers genuinely resembles the main parts of Horizon and repeats their visual style, however, the graphics will be much more modest and this is unsurprising as this is primarily an online game for mobile devices.
The developers describe Horizon Steel Frontiers as a complex and "relentless" game in a world where danger lurks at every turn. This is how the head of Guerrilla Games Jan-Bart Van Beek commented on the announcement:
At the heart of Horizon's storyline is the search for balance between humanity, nature, and technology. Sometimes it's harmony, sometimes — conflict. But it always creates a world filled with mysteries and beauty. We want players to feel the world's resilience and its hope. And that even when everything seems insurmountable, humanity is able to adapt, survive, and find meaning in this world.
Horizon Steel Frontiers servers will accommodate several thousand players, and its events will unfold in the Dead Lands — an arid territory inspired by Arizona and New Mexico.
From a gameplay perspective, players can expect action with a focus on melee combat, and one of the main features will be the ability to tear off a part of the robot/machine and use it as a weapon. Traditionally for MMORPGs, developers will provide extensive character customization, allowing detailed adjustments to appearance, clothing, hairstyle, and choosing one of the factions carried over from other parts of Horizon, including Nora, Tenakth, and Oseram.
When to expect
No release dates for Horizon Steel Frontiers yet.
