Exactly 40 years ago — in November 1985 — the world of computer technology changed forever: a then little-known company, Microsoft, released Windows 1.0.

What is known

The history of Windows is an example of how an initially unpopular product conquered the world.

Windows 1.0 was not an independent operating system, but a graphical shell for MS DOS — the basic OS at the time, developed by Microsoft in 1981 for personal computers.

Users criticized Windows 1.0 for poor compatibility, low performance, and several other shortcomings, which were corrected two years later in Windows 2.0, and it was this version that laid the vision for what the PC interface should be — convenient, intuitive, and highly functional.

Subsequent versions of Windows were released at intervals of 2-3 years, but later the gap became larger.

The latest version, Windows 11, was released in 2021. It continues to receive major updates regularly and is generally liked by users.

The history of Windows is certainly far from over, and Microsoft will actively develop its OS, expanding its capabilities.
