OpenAI announced the launch of a new feature — group chats in ChatGPT. Now users can join one dialogue and interact with the neural network collectively. The feature is available globally on all plans, including free, and allows up to 20 participants in one conversation.

What is known

Group chats operate as separate dialogues: each participant retains their settings and memory, but adding new people creates an independent conversation. ChatGPT connects to the discussion as needed — for instance, if tagged. The interface features reactions, emojis, and profile pictures, making communication more lively and convenient — like in familiar messengers.

Upon first entry, the system will prompt users to specify a name and avatar so participants can see who is typing. A chat can be created via the “People” icon in the upper right corner, and invitations are sent via link or directly.

A user can exclude any participant from the chat except the chat creator.

OpenAI positions group chats as a tool for joint planning, brainstorming, and collective decision-making. The new feature transforms ChatGPT from a personal assistant into a full participant in collective discussions, opening possibilities for work meetings, educational projects, and creative tasks.
