In 2025, Microsoft raised prices on Xbox consoles twice — this happened in May and September and was justified by "changes in the market." This unpopular decision significantly affected the company's reputation among gamers, but in the near future, the manufacturer may go for yet another price increase.

What is known

The authoritative tech blogger and insider Moore’s Law Is Dead reported that another price hike for the Xbox Series will not be long in coming. The reason for this situation will be a global shortage of memory chips, which is growing amid interest in AI technologies.

Giants of this segment, primarily OpenAI, have signed long-term multi-billion dollar contracts for memory supplies, and those who did not manage to do so will be forced to purchase it at an increased price, and even then, the products will not be enough for everyone.

Thus, Microsoft will face a difficult choice: raise the cost of Xbox once again or suspend the production of new consoles — both options will be bad for business.

Interestingly, Sony foresaw the memory shortage and purchased a huge amount of GDDR6, so if PlayStation becomes more expensive, it will be for other reasons.
