Android is preparing to make interaction with external monitors simpler. Starting from Android 16 QPR1, some Pixel smartphones have gained the ability to launch the interface in desktop mode instead of simple screen mirroring. However, until now, it has been necessary to change the settings manually each time.

What is known

In the new version of Android 16 Canary with build number 2511, a popup window appeared when connecting an external screen. In it, the user can choose between the "Screen mirroring" or "Desktop" modes. There's also a checkbox "Do not ask again" – the operating system will remember the selected option for a specific display.

The saved preferences can be changed in the settings:

  • Connected devices
  • External display
  • Default connection type

Enabling desktop mode through the developer options automatically activated it when connecting a display. For "Screen mirroring," it was necessary to either completely disable these features or manually change the display settings in the menu.

The new window with connection options is already working in the Canary version. It is expected that the feature will become available to a wider audience in future beta versions of Android 16, including the QPR3 update.
