The ModRetro M64 Console Unveiled - A Reimagined Iconic Nintendo 64 with 4K Support, Improved Controller, and Compatibility with Original Cartridges
ModRetro, founded by Palmer Luckey (creator of Oculus Rift and founder of Oculus VR), announced the M64 console, which reimagines the legendary Nintendo 64 (1996). The new console combines retro nostalgia with modern technology and is aimed at collectors and classic fans.
What is known
The ModRetro M64 is not a remake of the Nintendo 64; it is a full rethinking of the classic console with 4K support (via HDMI), a transparent case, and compatibility with original cartridges.
The console features an FPGA architecture that ensures accurate reproduction of original Nintendo 64 cartridges without emulation. Games run with modern image quality while preserving the original gameplay. Four ports for controllers are provided for local multiplayer.
ModRetro redesigned the iconic Nintendo 64 controller but retained its recognizable shape, improved ergonomics, and added modern elements. The console features a large power button and a menu wheel, with the transparent plastic case enhancing the retro effect.
ModRetro M64 is likely to go on sale before Christmas — this is hinted at by the video. The new product is priced at $199 — the same as the original console at the start of sales in 1996. Gamers are offered three color options: purple, white, and neon yellow.
