Rumors of a Jimny-based pickup appeared at the beginning of the current generation model's life in 2018, especially after Suzuki introduced the Jimny Sierra Pickup Style concept at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2019. Speculations continued after the appearance of a Jimny with an extended wheelbase in 2023 and reached a peak last year when Suzuki Australia's general manager hinted at the development of a two-door pickup.

Unfortunately, this optimism has now faded. Suzuki's chief engineer, Takamitsu Sasaki, informed the Australian publication Drive during the Japan Mobility Show that a Jimny-based pickup is not in the plans. He explained that there is 'no particular demand' for such a version, despite the enthusiasm of fans.

Besides market interest, Sasaki pointed out the technical challenges of adapting the platform for a full-fledged pickup. 'If we were to make a Jimny truck, we would have to make it very sturdy, which is very difficult,' he said. 'To accommodate a large weight at the back, the frame needs to be reinforced.'

Even if Suzuki decided to strengthen the chassis to increase payload capacity, the pickup would likely require more power than the current 1.5-liter Jimny engine, which produces 101 hp (75 kW). This engine remains the only option in markets outside Japan.

When asked about the possibility of a more powerful version, Sasaki dismissed the idea. 'We are not considering a larger power unit because this model is very specific in terms of body and engine. It's a balance, an ideal size, so we are not considering a more powerful engine,' he added.
