The Walt Disney Company announced an investment of $1 billion in OpenAI. This is the first major licensing agreement between a Hollywood studio and OpenAI, legalizing the use of iconic characters in generative videos.

What is Known

In addition to the financial infusion from Disney, the parties signed a three-year licensing agreement that will allow Sora video generator users to create videos featuring over 200 Disney, Marvel, Pixar, and Star Wars characters, and ChatGPT will generate images with their participation — all without fear of lawsuits from rights holders.

Some of the fan-created videos will be available for viewing on Disney+, opening a new format for the studio's interaction with the audience. In turn, OpenAI will integrate its technologies into Disney's ecosystem: ChatGPT and the company's API will be used for Disney+ and internal tools, helping employees and enhancing digital services.

Disney CEO Robert A. Iger called the deal "an important moment for the entertainment industry," emphasizing that the company intends to use AI responsibly to expand storytelling capabilities while maintaining creator rights protection.
