According to the company, on Monday a passenger was heading to the UCSF (University of California–San Francisco) medical center when labor began, and the child was born in the robotaxi.

What is known

Waymo's support service detected "unusual activity" in the vehicle, contacted the passenger, and simultaneously notified 911. How the staff became aware of what was happening, the company did not specify.

The robotaxi with the mother and newborn safely arrived at the hospital before the arrival of emergency services. The medical center confirmed that the woman and the child were delivered there, but the mother refused to speak to the press. The vehicle was taken out of service for cleaning after the trip. Waymo noted that such cases remain rare, but this is not the first child born in their car.

Waymo is owned by Alphabet and already transports passengers on highways and intercity routes in major cities in California and Arizona. Along with growing popularity, driverless taxis are also at the center of scandals: in September, one of the vehicles made a U-turn over a double solid line, and in October, another fatally hit a well-known cat named Kit Kat.
