Volkswagen announced a recall in the US for a batch of ID.4 electric crossovers due to high-voltage battery fire risk, linked to a defect in certain cells.

What's known

According to the US National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), some vehicles were found with incorrectly positioned electrode cells, which could damage the internal battery structure and increase the fire risk. The recall campaign includes 311 units of ID.4 from model years 2023–2024, manufactured from September 16, 2022, to September 22, 2024.

Volkswagen reports several thermal incidents with ID.4 in different states in 2024 — some vehicles caught fire while parked, others while driving. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside after charging, not to leave them in the garage overnight, not to use DC Level 3 fast charging, and to limit the charge level to 80%.

The manufacturer will start notifying owners of recalled vehicles on January 30, 2026. Dealers will replace potentially defective high-voltage battery modules free of charge, with no separate compensation program provided, as all vehicles are still under warranty.
