Google Translate has learned to translate slang and colloquial expressions more accurately with AI
Google has updated the Translate app, now it translates slang, idioms, and colloquial expressions more accurately thanks to the integration of Gemini artificial intelligence. The algorithm focuses not only on the direct meanings of words but also takes language nuances into account.
What is known
The new functionality is already available in the US and India for translation between English and about 20 other languages, including German, Spanish, Chinese, and Arabic.
Additionally, Google has introduced updates to the real-time language translation feature for Android. Now the translation can be heard directly in the headphones. The system tries to preserve the speaker's intonation, rhythm, and timbre so the listener can better understand who is speaking and how. The feature works with any headphones and supports over 70 languages. This option will appear on iOS next year.
Also, the company is expanding language learning tools that have been available in Translate since August. They track progress in learning a new language, including the number of consecutive days of practice, and provide feedback with pronunciation tips. Recently, these tools have become available in 20 more countries, including Germany, India, and Sweden.
