Tesla has filed a patent for a radio signal-transparent roof made of polymer materials, which could simplify the integration of Starlink satellite communication into the company's electric vehicles and provide connectivity beyond cellular networks. This is currently only a patent application, and there are no guarantees that the solution will reach mass production.

What is known

The document numbered U.S. 2025/0368267 describes panels made of polycarbonate and other polymers that allow radio frequency signals to pass through better than metal and glass. Due to the lower rigidity of such materials, Tesla proposes a multi-layer construction—up to four layers—to compensate for strength, reduce noise and vibrations.

The patent states that the use of polymer blends allows modules inside and outside the car to transmit signals to satellites and other devices. Such a roof could theoretically be applied to mass models, including Model 3 and Model Y, providing a stable connection with Starlink in areas with poor mobile network coverage.

Currently, Tesla offers standard connectivity, including navigation and basic vehicle functions, with many features available via Wi-Fi. The company also offers a premium package, available in the USA for $9.99 per month, which includes features like real-time traffic visualization and streaming services via cellular networks.
