Stellantis organized a demonstration tour in Europe to promote hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) as a renewable fuel for existing diesel vehicles. Citroën Berlingo and Fiat Ducato are used to demonstrate the technology.

What's known

As part of the HVO Aurora Trial project, conducted jointly with the French company SP3H, real-time monitoring of fuel consumption and carbon dioxide emissions is carried out. The automaker states that all its diesel passenger cars and light commercial vans are compatible with this fuel without any modifications.

HVO is produced from waste vegetable oils and animal fats. According to Stellantis, it offers companies and individuals the opportunity to immediately reduce harmful emissions without needing to replace the vehicle. Diesel models of Euro 5 and Euro 6 standards, already in operation, can also use this fuel.

The project was born out of the internal Stellantis Start*Up program, which encourages employee initiatives. SP3H provided smart sensors for monitoring and documenting the use of HVO during the trials.

Recently, the tour visited the Stellantis production center in Vigo (Spain), where the Berlingo is produced. The demonstration will continue in other European cities to collect data and spread information about renewable waste-derived fuel.
