ZF introduced software-based tire noise reduction for production cars
ZF will showcase a software feature at CES 2026 in Las Vegas that reduces tire noise in the cabin without additional damping equipment or microphone systems typically used in premium vehicles.
What is known
The Active Noise Reduction technology uses a ZF Smart Chassis Sensor with a built-in accelerometer to measure vibrations transmitted through the chassis and then generates counter signals through semi-active damping valves to reduce noise.
The system analyzes vibration data using an algorithm that recognizes characteristic noise patterns in the tire cavity, usually around 200 hertz. It then creates micro-movements in the shock absorber to counteract noise without affecting the main function of the device.
The current version of the system provides noise reduction of more than 3 dB, with future versions potentially reducing up to 10 dB. Mass production is scheduled for 2028. ZF stated that the technology may be applicable to other actuating mechanisms in the future, including active noise reduction from brakes.
