Chinese company BYD has produced its 15 millionth "New Energy Vehicle" (NEV). The company progressed from 10 to 15 million NEVs in 13 months.

What is known

The celebration event took place at the BYD factory in Jinan (China), which started mass producing cars three years ago. The 15 millionth vehicle was the 15,000th N8L — a six-seater crossover from the DENZA brand. The model uses the same "Super Hybrid" technology and e3 platform as the Z9GT, which DENZA will introduce to the European market in 2026.

NEV is a Chinese term. It includes fully electric models (BEV), plug-in hybrids (PHEV), and hydrogen fuel cell vehicles (FCEV). BYD's first NEV, the F3DM plug-in hybrid, was released in 2008, and it took 13 years to produce the first million vehicles.

BYD's total production volume for the 11 months of 2025 reached 4.182 million vehicles, which is 11.3% more compared to the same period last year. Overseas sales for the same period amounted to 917 thousand units, surpassing the total figure for 2024. BYD's global presence spans more than 110 countries and regions. BYD operates in 33 European countries through 1,000 sales outlets and plans to double the number of dealerships by the end of 2026.

BYD invested 43.75 billion yuan (5.3 billion euros) in research and development in the first three quarters of 2025, which is a 31% year-on-year increase. The total accumulated investment exceeded 220 billion yuan (26.65 billion euros). As a result, the company advanced in battery chemistry, driver assistance systems, and created the megawatt fast charge Flash Charging, which will appear in Europe in 2026.
