MG began deliveries of the first budget electric car with a semi-solid-state battery
MG SAIC began deliveries of the new version of the MG4 hatchback — Anxin Edition. This is the first budget electric car with a semi-solid-state battery.
What is known
The new MG4 appeared on the Chinese market in March 2025. At the start of sales, there was a surprise: the car was announced not in four originally declared versions, but in five. The fifth was the version called Anxin Edition with a semi-solid-state battery from the startup QingTao Energy, in which the parent company SAIC invested several years ago.
Such batteries are still rare in the industry and are considered an intermediate stage on the way to fully solid-state batteries. They promise a significant increase in range, reduced charging time, and enhanced safety compared to conventional batteries with liquid electrolytes.

Before the appearance of MG4 Anxin Edition, semi-solid-state batteries were installed in mass-produced cars only by another Chinese company — Nio, which produces more premium and expensive electric cars. Thus, MG4 became the first compact car for the mass market with this innovative battery technology.
The battery capacity is 53.95 kWh. In combination with a synchronous motor with permanent magnets with a maximum power of 120 kW, the range according to the CLTC cycle is 530 km with an energy consumption of 11.9 kWh per 100 km. With fast charging 2C, the battery charges from 30% to 80% in 21 minutes. The maximum speed is limited to 160 km/h. The new generation is significantly larger than its predecessor: length — 4.40 m, width — 1.84 m, height — 1.55 m, wheelbase — 2.75 m.
In China, MG4 Anxin Edition costs about 100,000 yuan (approximately 12,000 euros), while versions with conventional lithium-ion batteries start at 70,000 yuan (approximately 8,500 euros). The new MG4 is declared as a global model, but it is still unclear if the Anxin Edition will be presented in Europe. Furthermore, Chinese prices cannot be directly compared with European prices. Considering logistics costs, duties, and other fees, the starting price of the previous generation MG4 Electric in Germany is currently 34,990 euros.
