Bethesda Game Studios, with maniacal persistence, continues to use the Creation Engine — an engine that debuted in 2002 with the release of The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind. This platform has been criticized by gamers for years due to its technical imperfections, numerous bugs, and outdated graphics.

Finally, the developer has decided on a significant update to the Creation Engine.

What is Known

The authoritative insider and Windows Central journalist Jez Corden revealed on The Xbox Two Podcast that many Microsoft divisions are helping Bethesda completely rework the Creation Engine.

The main technological solution will be the implementation of individual components of the Unreal Engine to make games more modern and technologically advanced. Several large studios, including The Coalition — the author of modern parts of Gears of War, have been involved in this. This company has one of the most extensive experiences with Unreal Engine and understands the nuances of this engine best.

The new version of the Creation Engine is expected to debut in the major update of Starfield, which the media tentatively calls “Starfield 2.0” and is slated for release in 2026.

Starfield is planned to be used as a testing ground to verify the capabilities of the updated engine, after which it will be used in other Bethesda games, for example, in The Elder Scrolls 6.

Recall that the release of Starfield in September 2023 was clear evidence that the Creation Engine is hopelessly outdated: the game had an incredible number of loading screens, bugs became commonplace, and the quality of animations was so terrible that it was painful to watch Todd Howard's RPG. However, little has changed since then.
