Michelin and Sonatus create a real-time tire condition monitoring system
Michelin will present at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2026 in Las Vegas a new line of 'smart' tires capable of tracking their own wear and condition in real-time. The technology is based on artificial intelligence and is designed to enhance safety and reduce operating costs.
What is known
The system was developed in collaboration with the technology company Sonatus. It analyzes data already collected by the car, including braking intensity, load, lateral forces in turns, and other dynamic parameters. Based on these signals, the tires can more accurately assess the degree of wear and current condition without additional sensors.
The solution includes two modules — SmartLoad and SmartWear. Michelin believes that over time they may replace traditional tire condition monitoring systems. According to the company, the mass introduction of technology could provide global savings of up to 1.68 billion dollars by 2030.
Michelin notes that the system easily integrates with the Sonatus Collector AI platform and can adapt to different types of vehicles with minimal modifications. Meanwhile, all tire condition data is processed and stored within the vehicle without being transmitted to cloud services. This approach reduces safety and data privacy risks.
To demonstrate the system's operation, Michelin and Sonatus will showcase it at CES 2026 using a 1970 Ford Bronco equipped with 'smart' tires. Exhibition visitors will be able to track the tire condition in real-time via the Michelin MyTires app.
