Honda is preparing an unusual novelty: a hybrid Civic that can mimic gear shifts. The Civic e:HEV RS prototype will be one of the brand's key premieres at the Tokyo Auto Salon 2026.

What's Known

The Civic e:HEV RS is based on the RS version introduced in Japan in 2024. However, instead of a petrol 1.5-liter turbo engine and manual transmission, a self-charging hybrid system is used here. The main feature is the Honda S+ Shift mode, which simulates transmission operation by controlling revs, torque, and sound accompaniment.

The prototype has not yet been confirmed for serial production, but its appearance suggests that Honda is considering this possibility. If the model goes into production, the Civic will become the brand's second model with the S+ Shift system after the new Prelude.

It is expected that the e:HEV RS will receive Honda's standard hybrid setup with a 2.0-liter engine and two electric motors with a total output of about 200 hp (149 kW). Externally, the prototype is likely to be close to the current Civic RS.

In addition to the Civic, Honda Racing Corporation will showcase the Civic Type R HRC and Prelude HRC concepts aimed at the race track, as well as the Prelude-GT race car for the Super GT GT500 series, which will hit the tracks in 2026.

The Tokyo Auto Salon will be held from January 9 to 11 at Makuhari Messe. Honda's press conference will take place on January 8.
