The new year in Sony's gaming division began with troubles that could escalate into a global issue. Media reports are spreading that hackers have gained access to the PlayStation 5 ROM keys.

What is Known

ROM keys are security codes that can be used to hack the console's bootloader. If the leak is confirmed, it could significantly simplify hacking the PS5 with the further distribution of pirated game copies for the console.

The situation is complicated because Sony cannot change the ROM keys with a firmware update since they are recorded in the console's APU. The only thing the company can do is replace the security keys in a new revision of the PS5, but given that according to the latest financial report, more than 84 million PlayStation 5s have been sold, there will be little point in doing so.

It is worth noting that the fact of the ROM key theft has not yet been officially confirmed, and even if it turns out to be true, it does not guarantee console hacking, as the PS5 has other protection systems that need to be bypassed.
