Geely may announce its entry into the US market in the next 2-3 years
The Chinese automotive group Geely is considering entering the US electric vehicle market and may announce its plans within the next two to three years. This was stated by Ash Sutcliffe, Head of Global Communications at Geely Holding Group, at the Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas.
What is known
Geely organized test drives at CES for electric vehicles from various brands within the group. According to Sutcliffe, the company uses the exhibition as a platform for introducing its products to American media while also assessing the prospects of entering the US market. He emphasized that Geely is exploring opportunities for expansion in global markets and considers the US as one of the potential directions where an official announcement could be made within 24-36 months.
The discussion is about plans and strategy, not the actual start of sales within the specified timeframe. Sutcliffe named Zeekr and Lynk & Co. as possible brands for entry into the American market.
Commenting on trade restrictions and high tariffs on Chinese cars in the US, the Geely representative noted that the company has experience operating in various jurisdictions and understands how to adapt to such conditions. He reminded that Geely is a major shareholder of Volvo Cars, and Volvo's plant in South Carolina can be considered as one of the options for local production.
Separately, Sutcliffe touched on the topic of American restrictions on Chinese software in cars. According to him, Geely, as a global company, is accustomed to working within different data protection and privacy requirements. He noted that the group already complies with regulatory regimes such as Europe's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the California Consumer Privacy Act (CCPA) and is ready to adapt to American rules when they are finally formulated.
