In the fall of 2025, rumors appeared online that a new installment of the cult historical strategy series Age of Empires was in development.

At that time, it was only known that the game was being created on Unreal Engine 5, and now a little more information has emerged.

What is known

Authoritative insider and Windows Central journalist Jez Corden confirmed in an Xbox Two podcast that the new Age of Empires is indeed in development and will be released on a grand scale, as it is of great importance to Microsoft (unlike the Prototype series).

According to Corden, the authors decided to abandon their own technologies in favor of Unreal Engine 5, as this platform provides more opportunities and better aligns with long-term plans. Moreover, a version of the engine specially adapted to the features of the RTS genre is being used.

At least, in the early stage, World’s Edge Studios is involved in the game’s development, but the insider assures that several more teams will be brought in for full production, although Corden does not yet know who that will be.

As for the release dates of the strategy, the insider remains pessimistic: the game is at such an early stage of development that he doesn't even know which setting has been chosen for it. It can be assumed that the game will be part of the Xbox next-generation launch lineup (2027-2028) or will come out even later.
