The First Volkswagen with a Range Extender Is the Largest SUV of the Brand
Volkswagen has introduced its first electric vehicle with a range extender (EREV). The ID. Era 9X model is produced in China as part of a joint venture between Volkswagen and SAIC and represents the production embodiment of the ID. Era concept shown last year.
What is Known
The six-seater SUV, in terms of its proportions and style, more resembles a Range Rover than traditional models of the German brand. A new design language has been developed for it, specifically oriented towards Volkswagen's Chinese lineup. In terms of dimensions, the ID. Era 9X has become one of the largest vehicles in the brand's history. Its length is 5.21 meters, which is more than the second-generation Atlas, known in China as the Teramont Pro.
The model's width is 1997 mm, height is 1810 mm, and the wheelbase reaches 3070 mm. With the exception of the Bentley Bentayga with an extended wheelbase, it is the longest SUV in the Volkswagen Group, although it could be surpassed in the future by the upcoming Audi Q9. According to China's Ministry of Industry, the curb weight of the heaviest version reaches 2700 kg.
The main feature of the ID. Era 9X is its power unit. The vehicle is equipped with a 1.5-liter turbocharged gasoline engine, used solely as a generator for recharging the drive battery. The four-cylinder EA211 family engine operates on the Miller cycle and is equipped with a variable-geometry turbocharger.
The internal combustion engine develops 141 hp and works in conjunction with one or two electric motors. The base version received a single electric motor on the rear axle with a power output of 295 hp. In the all-wheel-drive configuration with two electric motors, the total system power reaches 510 hp. The single-motor version is equipped with a battery with a capacity of 51.1 kWh, with an available extended battery of 65.2 kWh. For the two-motor version, the larger battery is standard equipment.
According to Volkswagen, the extended capacity battery provides an electric range of over 400 km in the CLTC cycle. The total range has not yet been disclosed, but it is expected that it may reach about 1000 km depending on the fuel tank volume.
Most likely, the ID. Era 9X will remain exclusive to the Chinese market and will not appear for sale outside it.
