Tesla Full Self-Driving feature will soon be available by subscription only
Tesla will close the option for a one-time purchase of the Full Self-Driving (FSD) feature. Starting February 14, FSD will only be available by subscription for $99 per month. Tesla CEO Elon Musk announced this on social media platform X.
What's known
Previously, US customers could either pay about $8,000 for a lifetime access to the Full Self-Driving feature or subscribe. Only the second option will remain available.
According to Tesla, about 12% of vehicle owners subscribe to FSD. The usage rate of the system for Model Y and Model 3 cars is between 12% and 18%, while for Model S and Model X this figure reaches 50-60%.
The FSD driving assistance system is still classified as a level 2 autonomy system by SAE and requires constant driver supervision. The decision to change the payment policy was made amid legal disputes and criticism due to the system's previously stated capabilities not being met.
