ZF and BMW signed a multi-billion agreement on automatic transmissions
BMW and ZF Friedrichshafen signed a multi-billion euro contract for the supply of ZF 8HP 8-speed automatic transmissions. The agreement is valid until the end of the 2030s and provides for further joint development of the transmission with an emphasis on compatibility with electrified powertrains.
What is known
Thus, BMW secured a transmission supplier for the next decade, and ZF received guarantees for investments in the evolution of the platform. Instead of abandoning the classic "automatic", companies are focusing on adapting it for mild hybrids, plug-in hybrids, and internal combustion engine cars, which BMW intends to produce for many more years.

The next generation 8HP will evolve in three key areas: increasing efficiency and reducing emissions, maintaining high dynamic performance in various hybrid architectures, and long-term relevance considering future regulatory and market changes.
For BMW customers, this means retaining a time-tested, reliable, and refined transmission adapted to the transition period between classic and electric powertrains.
