Samsung has not yet introduced the Galaxy S26 lineup, but interesting information about the next-generation flagship — Galaxy S27 Ultra — has already appeared online.

The insider PhoneFuturist reported that the flagship model for 2027 will receive a specially developed innovative facial recognition system, similar to Apple's Face ID but more compact and with a slightly different operating principle.

What is known

The biometric system will be called Polar ID and instead of creating a three-dimensional map of the face, it will read the reflection of infrared rays from the skin surface. The technology is being developed by Samsung with the support of Metalenz, and its advantageous difference from Face ID is the minimal space required for installation inside a smartphone — it will fit in a standard round cutout for the front camera.

The operating principle of Polar ID is described as follows: An IR projector illuminates the face with light, the reflection of which is read by a special camera already available to Samsung. Since artificial materials, such as silicone masks or paper photographs, scatter light differently, it is almost impossible to deceive such a system.

Therefore, for Polar ID to work, only two sensors are required: an IR projector and a suitable front camera. It is noteworthy that this feature will work even through sunglasses and medical masks and at the same speed as Face ID.
