Sony and Guerrilla Games studio announce the new game Horizon Hunters Gathering, but will the fans appreciate it?
Sony and Guerrilla Games continue to expand the Horizon franchise, and after two story-driven action games, a VR game, LEGO Horizon Adventures, and the announcement of MMORPG Horizon Steel Frontiers, have introduced a project in a new genre for them — cooperative action.
What is known
The game is named Horizon Hunters Gathering and though it is part of the franchise, it is clearly aimed at a somewhat different audience than Horizon Zero Dawn and its sequel.
We have a dynamic game for PC and PS5 with cartoonish and somewhat exaggerated graphics, where players gather in teams of three and go on raids against beast-like robots. Before each mission, gamers need to choose one of the developer-prepared characters, each of whom has unique abilities, and then select equipment and start the mission.
Developers claim that each character has a backstory woven into the overall context of the Horizon series events.
There will be several game modes in Horizon Hunters Gathering, but only two are currently known:
- Machine Invasion — a dynamic mission where players must fend off advancing waves of robots and at the end battle a boss;
- Cauldron Descent — a long multi-stage challenge where players will both fight and explore the environment.
Between missions, players will enter a social hub where they can customize their character, communicate or find new partners, and purchase new items.
Guerrilla Games plans to actively develop Horizon Hunters Gathering by adding not only content but also certain storylines.
Overall, the concept of Horizon Hunters Gathering resembles FBC: Firebreak — a failed cooperative shooter from Remedy Entertainment, which was supposed to attract a new audience to the series of single-player games by Finnish developers, but the result was unfortunate.
When to expect
The release date for Horizon Hunters Gathering has not yet been disclosed, but pages with game details are already available in the PS Store and Steam. Closed tests will be held at the end of February.
