A direct continuation of the best game of 2023, Baldur's Gate 3, has been announced, but there are a few unexpected nuances: it will be a series and HBO is creating it.

What is known

After the successful but yet incomplete adaptation of The Last of Us, the American film company is taking on the adaptation of another game that was released recently but has already become cult.

The showrunner for the Baldur's Gate series will be producer and creator of The Last of Us adaptation idea Craig Mazin, who called this announcement a “dream job.” According to him, he has spent thousands of hours in Baldur's Gate 3 and is a fan not only of this game but also of the entire DD universe where the events of the famous RPG by Larian Studios take place.

It is notably mentioned that the Belgian developers are not involved in creating the Baldur's Gate series, which is not surprising since the head of the studio Swen Vincke has repeatedly stated that his team is finished with this series and aims to move forward.

The series will focus on the adventures of new characters, but HBO plans to introduce some heroes from Baldur's Gate 3 into the narrative and even wants their roles to be played by the same actors as in the game.

When to expect

The Baldur's Gate series won't be released soon, as Craig Mazin will only start working on it after finishing the adaptation of The Last of Us. But, let us remind you, according to rumors, the The Last of Us series may end in the third season: HBO chief hinted at the absence of further plans, contrary to earlier statements by the showrunners.
