Big changes are coming to the Discord platform — new privacy rules will take effect in March, and all users of the most popular online communication app worldwide will temporarily be switched to "teen mode," which does not allow access to adult content.

What is known

To remove the restriction, you need to verify your identity by taking a photo of your passport or another document confirming biometric data, or through a short video selfie.

Previously, this requirement was only in effect in the UK and Australia but now extends to all regions.

Until the user verifies their age, the following restrictions will apply to them in Discord:

  • Photos and videos marked 18+ will be blurred;
  • Access to age-restricted channels and servers will be closed;
  • Incoming messages from strangers will be sent to a separate folder;
  • Friend request notifications from strangers will be additionally marked;
  • The ability to speak in podium channels will be closed.

Additionally, Discord will introduce a background age assessment system that will determine based on user behavior if they are a minor.

Furthermore, Discord announced a strange initiative: a "consultative board" of 10-12 teenagers will be created. It is expected that they will help enhance the safety of their peers, but it seems this idea will not be viable.
