OpenAI has officially launched ad testing in ChatGPT for free and Go-tariff users in the USA. Ad blocks appear at the bottom of the chats, separately from the AI responses, with appropriate labeling.

What is known

OpenAI emphasizes that ads will not affect the content of ChatGPT's responses and will not appear in conversations on sensitive topics — such as health or politics.

The content of the ads is selected according to current conversations, but users can turn off personalization and clear collected data. OpenAI assures that it does not sell or transfer chat information to advertisers. Users under the age of 18 will not see ads during the testing period.

In its blog, the company explained that launching ads is intended to provide wider access to the powerful features of ChatGPT while maintaining trust in the service. CNBC sources report that advertising will not become OpenAI's main revenue and will provide less than half of the total revenue. Additional income is obtained from purchases users make through the shopping integration function.

At the same time, the launch of ads became a subject of irony from Anthropic. The company, which develops the Claude chatbot, aired a commercial during the Super Bowl. It features a phrase about ads coming to artificial intelligence but not appearing in Claude.
