The American company Anthropic received a legal complaint in India from the local company Anthropic Software, which claims to have used this name since 2017. The lawsuit was filed in the commercial court in Karnataka in January.

What is known

The Indian company seeks recognition of its priority, cessation of name usage to avoid confusion, and compensation of 10 million rupees (≈110,000 dollars).

Anthropic announced the opening of an office in India in October 2025, and recently appointed Irina Ghosh, former head of Microsoft India, to lead the Indian division. The complaint states that the presence of two companies with the same name is causing confusion among clients.

The founder of Anthropic Software, Mohammad Ayaz Mulla, noted that the goal is not conflict but legal demarcation. According to him, the company went to court to protect its rights and avoid confusion.

The legal document dated January 20, cited by TechCrunch, confirms the serving of a summons to the American company. The court did not impose a temporary injunction, and the case is set for hearing on February 16.

Anthropic is preparing to participate in the AI Impact Summit in New Delhi next week. Among the speakers are company co-founder Dario Amodei, as well as Sam Altman, Jensen Huang, and Sundar Pichai.
