BMW recalls 575,000 vehicles worldwide due to starter fire risk
BMW has announced a global recall campaign affecting about 575,000 vehicles. The reason is a potential starter defect: wear of the magnetic switch can lead to overheating and, in rare cases, ignition.
What is known
The issue became known after internal audits and customer complaints. BMW explains that over time, especially with a large number of engine starts, wear of the starter's magnetic switch may increase. The first signs are that the engine starts with difficulty or does not start at all. In extreme cases, overheating of the unit is possible, which increases the risk of fire.
The German automobile club ADAC clarifies that metal shavings can cause a short circuit in the magnetic switch. Next, overheating of the starter is possible, even during driving.
The recall applies to the following models:
- 2 Series Coupé (G42)
- 3 Series Sedan (G20)
- 3 Series Touring (G21)
- 3 Series Long Wheelbase for China (G28)
- 4 Series Coupé (G22)
- 4 Series Convertible (G23)
- 4 Series Gran Coupé (G26)
- 5 Series Sedan (G30)
- 5 Series Touring (G31)
- 6 Series Gran Turismo (G32)
- 7 Series Sedan (G11, G12)
- X3 (G01)
- X4 (G02)
- X5 (G05)
- X6 (G06)
- Z4 (G29)
The Toyota Supra, which is technically identical to the Z4, is also subject to the recall.
In Germany, as a corrective measure, the starter will be replaced. In some cases, according to ADAC, the battery may also need to be replaced. Before repairs are carried out, owners are advised not to leave the vehicle with the engine running unattended if it falls under the recall.
The company also advises checking the VIN number through the official recall check service in their country and, if necessary, scheduling a dealer appointment.
