India has 100 million active ChatGPT users per week, making the country one of OpenAI's largest markets in the world, CEO Sam Altman reported on the eve of the AI government summit in New Delhi.

What is known

In an article for the Times of India, Altman spoke about the rapid growth of ChatGPT in India, where OpenAI opened an office in New Delhi in August 2025. The company has adapted its approach for the local market, including launching the ChatGPT Go tariff for less than $5, and then making it free for a year for Indian users.

According to Altman, India is second only to the US in terms of ChatGPT users, with students playing the most significant role in growth. This confirms a general trend: global AI companies are actively targeting Indian students, offering free subscriptions and educational tools. Google, for example, offered Indian students a free year of AI Pro in September 2025.

Despite its immense popularity, OpenAI acknowledges the difficulty of monetization in India. Altman noted that the country risks missing the chance for democratic AI implementation due to unequal access and infrastructure constraints. The company plans to deepen cooperation with the government and announce new partnerships to expand access to AI technologies.

The India AI Impact Summit, which will last five days, will bring together leading global and local technology and policy leaders, including Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, Sundar Pichai from Google, Mukesh Ambani, and Nandan Nilekani.
