The situation in the memory market continues to affect the industry, and it seems that the next PlayStation may become a victim of the shortage. According to Bloomberg, Sony is reconsidering the release schedule of the new console and allows for a release postponement to 2028 or even 2029, despite having pre-purchased a huge batch of DRAM chips in advance.

Analysts and insiders have been saying for several months that the The Next Generation of PlayStation and Xbox May Be Delayed: Insider Predicts Sony and Microsoft Plan Changes Due to RAM Market Problems than the expected 7-8-year cycle, and now another source has confirmed this.

What is known

The reason is simple yet global: the rapid growth in demand for chips from companies developing AI infrastructure. Giants like Amazon, Alphabet, and OpenAI are actively buying large volumes of memory for data centers, leading to a sharp rise in prices and reduced availability of components for consumer electronics manufacturers. Some suppliers are even switching capacities exclusively to orders from AI companies.

Sony initially planned to release the new console in 2027, but the surge in the cost of memory and SSDs (up to 75% during the period from the end of 2025) forced the company to reconsider its strategy. If the shortage intensifies, the launch window may indeed shift one or two years forward.

According to sources familiar with Sony's internal plans, the postponement will become a significant deviation from the previous roadmap, designed to maintain a stable interest in the platform between generations. However, the current memory crisis affects the entire industry — from GPUs to SSDs — and may force the company to urgently adapt to new realities.

The crisis has also affected Nintendo. According to Bloomberg, the Japanese company may significantly raise the cost of Switch 2 consoles as early as this year since the rising cost of components makes them unprofitable while maintaining the current cost ($450), and this directly affects Nintendo's stock prices — it is rapidly falling.

Recall, even Valve Coming soon, but will be more expensive: Valve commented on the release situation of Steam Machine, Steam Frame, and Controller 2, because of which Half-Life 3 has still not been announced.
