The global shortage of DRAM chips will affect not only electronics manufacturers but also car manufacturers. This was stated by Ford's CFO Sherry House, speaking at the Wolfe Research Global Auto, Auto Tech and Semiconductor Conference 2026.

What is known

The DRAM shortage is associated with a sharp increase in demand from the AI industry. Companies developing AI are actively purchasing memory, which has increased prices by 80–90%. Massive purchases by tech giants further heighten market tension.

Ford also actively uses AI technologies—for supply chain monitoring, production optimization, and vehicle development. Company head Jim Farley previously stated that AI could replace half of the office workers in the USA, emphasizing the scale of potential changes.

According to Sherry House, Ford currently has sufficient chip supplies, but price increases are already factored into the company's financial plans. If pressure on DRAM costs persists, it could affect vehicle costs and, ultimately, retail prices.
