In China, physical switches will become mandatory in cars
The Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) plans to require automakers to equip new cars with physical controls for key functions. The requirement is expected to apply only to new models starting from July 1, 2026.
What will change
In recent years, Chinese electric vehicles and hybrids have featured minimalist interiors with a large central screen, which manages most functions. In some cases, an additional screen is used for the front passenger. Now the authorities intend to reduce dependence on touch interfaces.
Changes to the national standard GB4094—2016 "The Marking of Controls, Indicators, and Signal Devices for Motor Vehicles” introduce new types and technical requirements for physical controls. The main goal is to ensure access to key functions without the need to look at the screen and with the possibility of tactile "blind" control.
Functions for which physical controls are required
Lighting:
- turn signals
- hazard warning lights
- horn
Transmission:
- modes P / R / N / D (switching only through the screen will be prohibited)
Driver Assistance Systems:
- separate activation button for ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems)
Safety and Emergency Functions:
- wipers
- window heating and ventilation
- power windows
- emergency call system (AECS)
- power off button for electric vehicle
Technical Requirements
The document also establishes parameters for the specified controls:
- minimum active area of at least 10×10 mm
- fixed location
- ability to operate without visual control
- presence of tactile or auditory feedback
- retention of basic functions in case of system failure or power loss
Work on updating the standard has been ongoing since 2023. Major automakers and research organizations participated in the discussion, including the China Automotive Technology and Research Center, Geely, FAW-Volkswagen, BYD, and Great Wall Motor. The draft document has already been prepared and will soon be published for public discussion.
