God of War: Sons of Sparta became the lowest-rated game in the series, but is it really that bad?
Last week, Sony released God of War: Sons of Sparta, a metroidvania that is a spinoff and prequel of the iconic God of War franchise centered around the youth of Kratos and his brother Deimos, without any prior announcements.
The game from Santa Monica Studio and Mega Cat Studios quickly became the subject of heated debates and received mixed public reactions because it strays far from the familiar brutal action format and most resembles the old mobile JAVA game God of War: Betrayal (2007).
Well, after a week, the community has experienced God of War: Sons of Sparta and formed an opinion.
What is known
Sons of Sparta became the lowest-rated game in the God of War series on Metacritic, receiving 68 points from critics and 6.55 from gamers, and on Opencritic, the game has only 29% recommendations.
Overall, it's a decent 2D metroidvania with a pleasant visual style, an interesting concept, and a worthy level design. Sons of Sparta is hard to call a bad or failed game, but it is a weak competitor for representatives of its genre and definitely doesn’t match the epic scale of the main God of War games.
Those who are willing to accept a lower budget and a shift to 2D will get their dose of positive emotions, but those waiting for epic battles and Hollywood-style direction will be disappointed.
Our reviewer was more favorable towards God of War: Sons of Sparta and Kratos' youth in 2D: God of War: Sons of Sparta review. Let us remind you that the game is currently available only on PS5, and a remake of the original God of War trilogy is in development.
