Volvo is launching a major software update for cars released starting from 2020. The new version of the software 5.0.5 will begin to roll out in about three weeks in the format of an over-the-air (OTA) update. Those who do not want to wait can install it earlier at an official dealer.

What is known

The update is intended for models initially equipped with a multimedia system based on Google. The interface called Volvo Car UX received a redesigned design, similar to that used in the brand's latest cars with an enlarged central display.

The main change is a new home screen with prioritized map display and a permanent quick access panel for the most demanded functions. This also simplifies mode switching in plug-in hybrids. In the current version of the software 4.2.13 for PHEVs released before 2025, changing modes requires three screen taps. In the new version, only two taps are enough to switch from fully electric mode to another.

Changes have also affected the digital dashboard — the map display area has become slightly larger. A similar solution is already applied in the electric models Volvo EX30 and Volvo EX90.

The capabilities of the smartphone app have been further expanded. Owners will be able to link Volvo ID to their car, as well as invite other users for shared access to the vehicle. Adding an account is possible through scanning a QR code on the central display.

The update for pre-facelift models with the Google-based system is built on the Android Automotive OS 13 platform.

At the same time, the question of performance remains open. New Volvo cars are equipped with more powerful processors than their relatively new predecessors. Earlier, owners complained about interface delays and system failures, so the smooth operation of the updated software will become one of the main factors for assessing the quality of the software.
