The new version of the Linux 7.0 kernel includes additional fixes for graphics card drivers. After updating the graphics subsystem last week, developers focused on stability, and the AMDGPU driver received the most changes.

What's Known

The update primarily concerns older AMD Radeon graphics cards on GCN 1.0 and GCN 1.1 architectures. Developers continue to improve their support within the modern AMDGPU driver, which gradually replaced the obsolete Radeon DRM. In Linux 7.0, they fixed the 'black screen' issue that occurred when connecting a monitor via an analog connector (VGA) — particularly on the Radeon HD 7790. They also made the operation of analog outputs more stable and consistent with other connection types.

A separate fix addresses older Apple MacBook Pros with switchable Intel and AMD graphics. Some models with Radeon Pro 560 experienced cursor flickering and driver errors when using GNOME with Wayland. This issue has now been resolved.

Additionally, Linux 7.0 includes fixes for Hainan GPUs, updated code for new graphics units in upcoming AMD hardware, and made changes to the Fastboot mechanism. Some current fixes are planned to be backported to stable kernel versions to become available to a wider range of users.
