The extended version of Tesla Model Y may appear outside China
Tesla may start selling the extended version of the Model Y crossover with three rows of seats outside China. This refers to the Model Y L modification in a six-seat configuration, which is already sold in the Chinese market.
What is known
According to the CarExpert website, Model Y L could appear in Australia. The report mentions certification documents published by Australian authorities. They indicate a possible launch of the model as early as this year.
The Y L version features an extended wheelbase and overall length, increased by almost 18 cm compared to the standard Model Y. The additional space allowed for a three-row 2+2+2 scheme: the second row has separate seats, and the third row features a two-seat bench. The trunk volume has increased from 2,138 to 2,539 liters.
According to certification documents, in Australia, the Y L will be available with a dual-motor all-wheel-drive system (AWD). The powertrain and battery capacity match the Premium Long Range version, with a power output of about 506 hp. The expected range in the WLTP cycle could reach 372 miles (almost 600 km) in Australia. Previously, the model also received approval for the European market, where the declared range is up to 423 miles (680 km) according to WLTP.
In China, the Model Y L is equipped with power-operated, heated, and ventilated second-row seats. The third-row seats are heated and fold down with power operation. The suspension is upgraded with a continuously variable damping system to compensate for the increased load. In China, Y L is approximately $3,886 more expensive than a comparable version of the standard Model Y.
Deliveries to Australia will be from China, where most of the Model Y units are produced. Expanding sales geography for the three-row version will allow Tesla to assess the demand for a more spacious configuration in other markets.
