The Chinese smartphone manufacturer Tecno is preparing to showcase a concept of an unusual modular smartphone at the Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2026, which will take place from March 2 to 5 in Barcelona.

Modular smartphones have appeared in the industry several times (for example, Google Project Ara or LG G5), but never became mass products. The new concept from Tecno emphasizes thinness, lightness, and flexibility, which may interest both enthusiasts and those who want to customize their smartphone.

The Tecno Idea

The device is created in the concept of Modular Magnetic Interconnection Technology — the base smartphone is ultra-thin, and additional modules attach to it using magnets and special contacts.

The body thickness is only 4.9 mm, making it one of the thinnest devices in the world even with attached modules.

Preliminary information suggests that the ecosystem will include about 10 accessories, including:

  • a thin power bank (about 4.5 mm);
  • a camera module and additional lens;
  • modules with different functions for photos and entertainment, including a D-pad for games.

Design and Innovations

Tecno divided the smartphone's back panel into several zones for easy module placement. Communication between the base and accessories will be via Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, or mmWave.

The exhibition will present two design options for the Tecno modular phone: Atom, which features a minimalist design with a silver body and red accents, and Moda, which, according to the company, has a more “geeky” aesthetic (photo in preview).

Currently, it's just a concept, and it's unknown whether the device will be launched in mass production.
