Critics are thrilled with Resident Evil Requiem — Capcom's idea with two protagonists is considered incredibly successful
Long before the release of Resident Evil Requiem, it was obvious that it would be one of the best games of 2026 and a cool continuation of the 30-year-old series — Capcom combined two completely different gameplays in one game and promised an incredible level of technical execution. Gamers show great interest in the novelty and now we know for sure that the credit of trust is fully justified.
What is known
Journalists and bloggers have begun publishing their reviews of Resident Evil Requiem, which confirm that it is one of the best games in the series. Japanese developers skillfully diversified the gameplay with the help of two fundamentally different protagonists — missions for Leon are more action-like and reminiscent in style of Resident Evil IV, where Kennedy was the central character, while episodes for Grace are similar to RE7 and are built on the principle of classic survival horror: the heroine is practically unable to use weapons, tires quickly, and cannot withstand many monster attacks, so she prefers to hide from them, but in extreme cases, she can stand up for herself.
Gamers will visit completely new locations and get into iconic places of the destroyed Raccoon City, for example, the legendary police station from Resident Evil 2. The storylines of both characters are equally captivating, and it is interesting to observe their relationships.
Another important innovation is the unique zombies, who have partially retained remnants of their former personality and automatically repeat learned actions, for example, a creepy butcher covered in rags and body remnants monotonously wields a cleaver in an empty kitchen.
Atmosphere, soundtrack, detailing, and other elements of the game are at the highest level, as confirmed by critics' scores.
- Opencritic — 88 points with 98% recommendations;
- Metacritic — from 88 to 92 points depending on the platform.
For comparison, Resident Evil 7 in 2017 averaged 86 points on Metacritic, Resident Evil Village received 84 points, while the remake of the cult Resident Evil 4 earned 93 points.
Fans of the series will especially appreciate the closure of old storylines, the large number of references, and answers to long-standing questions.
Among the huge amount of praise, a few drawbacks are noted, including the small amount of additional content, for example, the lack of a "Mercenaries" mode, but knowing Capcom's extensive post-release support, there is little doubt that it will be added later in a DLC or patch.
The release of Resident Evil Requiem is scheduled for February 27, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and Nintendo Switch 2.
