Subaru has started producing a global electric vehicle at its own plant
Subaru has begun for the first time to produce an electric vehicle for the global market at its own plant in Japan. The production of the E-Outback started at the Subaru Yajima Plant, north of Tokyo. Before this, the brand's only fully electric model, the Subaru Solterra, was assembled at the partner's development site in Toyota City, near Nagoya.
From August 2025 to January 2026, the facility was modernized to produce the new battery-powered E-Outback. Now, on one production line, they can assemble electric cars, gasoline engine cars, and hybrids.
The E-Outback model became the third electric vehicle by Subaru, developed jointly with Toyota, following the Solterra and Uncharted. In the USA, it is sold under the name Trailseeker. The similar Toyota model is called the bZ4X Touring.
The main difference between the E-Outback and the bZ4X Touring is that Toyota is available in both front-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive versions, while Subaru is exclusively all-wheel-drive. According to Subaru Germany, the model should enter the German and European markets in the second half of 2026. A 74.7 kWh battery will provide a range of about 450 km in the WLTP cycle. This figure seems conservative, as Toyota claims up to 528 km with a similar battery.
In addition to the E-Outback, the updated Solterra will go on sale in 2026. The relative of the Toyota bZ4X will charge faster and travel further on a single charge. Additionally, in the spring of 2026, Uncharted, the equivalent of the Toyota C-HR+, will appear in Germany.
