Anthropic has opened the memory function in the free version of the Claude chatbot. Previously, this feature was only available in paid plans. Now users can enable memory saving, which allows the service to take into account information from previous conversations and generate personalized and contextual responses.

What is known

The memory function was first introduced in August last year, and later the ability to divide memories by individual topics was added. If a user activates memory, Claude will be able to take into account previous queries and preferences. At the same time, the settings provide flexible management: memory can be temporarily paused with data retention or completely deleted so that information is not stored on the company's servers.

The update appeared shortly after Anthropic simplified the import of chat history from competing services. This could strengthen Claude's position in the market — the app recently topped the free apps ranking in the App Store.

Amid growing popularity, the company also found itself at the center of a public discussion with the Pentagon. US Secretary of Defense Pete Hagset stated about "risks to the supply chain" following Anthropic's refusal to sign a contract for the use of its models in mass surveillance and autonomous weapons projects. The company announced its intention to appeal this decision.
