OpenAI Acquires Promptfoo to Boost AI Security: A Game-Changer for Fortune 500 Companies
OpenAI has announced the acquisition of the startup Promptfoo, which specializes in AI system security. The deal was reported on the company's official blog. After completion of the transaction, Promptfoo's technologies will be integrated into the OpenAI Frontier platform — a corporate solution for creating and managing AI agents.
What is known
Promptfoo was founded in 2024 by Ian Webster and Michael D'Angelo. The company develops tools that help test large language models (LLM) for vulnerabilities and protect them from attacks or manipulation. Among the startup's products is an open interface and library for system security checks. According to the company, its solutions are used by over 25% of Fortune 500 companies.
The development of autonomous AI agents capable of performing digital tasks without human intervention is attracting significant business interest due to potential productivity increases. At the same time, such systems create new risks: attackers may attempt to access confidential data or influence automated processes. That is why companies working with advanced AI models are actively investing in protection technologies.
After integrating Promptfoo's technologies, the OpenAI Frontier platform will be able to automatically conduct so-called "red-teaming" — testing systems for potential attacks, evaluate AI agents' workflows for security risks, and monitor activity to ensure compliance. OpenAI also stated that they plan to continue developing Promptfoo's open tools.
The deal's value is not disclosed. According to PitchBook, the startup has raised about $23 million in investments since its founding, and after a funding round in July 2025, it was valued at approximately $86 million.
