MAN Unveils Powerful TGX Truck Capable of Hauling Up to 250 Tons
MAN Truck & Bus has introduced a new version of the MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4, designed for transporting particularly heavy loads. Such as wind turbine elements, transformers, and other large industrial components.
What is known
The new truck is designed for a maximum gross vehicle weight of up to 250 tons. The basis of the MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4 is a four-axle chassis.
The base vehicle will be assembled at the MAN Truck & Bus plant in Munich. After that, the trucks will be sent to the MAN Truck Modification Center in Wittlich, Germany for further modifications. There, the truck is equipped with equipment to handle heavy loads, including:
- reinforced cooling systems
- additional fuel and hydraulic tanks
- specialized coupling devices for heavy trailers
Engine and Transmission
The vehicle is equipped with a D3876 inline six-cylinder diesel engine with 640 hp. The maximum torque is 3,000 N·m. The peak torque is available in the range of approximately 900 to 1,380 rpm, which is especially important when driving at low speeds with a heavy load.
The engine is paired with a 12-speed automated TipMatic 12.30 OD gearbox. The transmission features a hydrodynamic converter clutch, which facilitates starting with extremely high loads and smoothly increases the transmitted torque.
For increased efficiency, there are different transmission modes, including a special mode for loads up to 250 tons and an economical mode for lighter loads.
Brakes and heavy trailer control
A retarder is used for long braking on descents, which reduces the load on the main braking system when driving with a heavy trailer.
A key element of the equipment is the heavy load module behind the cab, known as the "heavy cargo tower." It houses:
- additional compressed air receivers with a volume of 160 liters
- a 960-liter diesel fuel tank
- a 290-liter hydraulic system tank
The dual-circuit hydraulic system is capable of developing pressure up to 300 bar. It ensures the operation of steering systems for multi-axle heavy trailers. An additional radiator is also installed here, which helps maintain stable engine temperature at low speeds and with high loads.
Coupling devices
The truck is equipped with a JOST JSK 38 C fifth-wheel coupling device with a diameter of 3.5 inches. The design features a movable mount, allowing the optimization of load distribution across the chassis.
A tow coupling is additionally installed at the front for towing or pushing mode, and an automatic hitch device can be installed at the rear.
First Customer
The first instance of the MAN TGX 41.640 8x4/4 was delivered to the German company BFS, which provides specialized equipment for heavy transports.
The company plans to use the new truck for short-term projects requiring the transportation of particularly heavy loads.
