Dark Messiah: Community Edition to Launch on Steam in 2026 with Stunning Modern Graphics and Co-op Mode
Many gamers may have already forgotten about the fan remaster development of the cult action RPG Dark Messiah of Might and Magic, which was released in 2006 and was remembered not only for its complex and spectacular combat system but also for the unique opportunity to kick an orc into a chasm or onto steel spikes.
Finally, the team of enthusiasts from wiltOS Technologies reminded everyone of the project's existence and shared some excellent news — there will be no need to visit third-party services or learn programming languages to install the updated game. They managed to reach an agreement not only with Ubisoft but also with Valve.
What's Known
The team announced that in 2026, Dark Messiah: Community Edition will officially appear on Steam, and soon a game page will be available on the service. Currently, developers are porting it to the most current version of the Source 1 engine and are verifying the correct operation of graphics mods so that the game looks great while retaining its original style.
The development of Dark Messiah: Community Edition became possible thanks to the emergence of advanced and accessible tools, primarily RTX Remix from NVIDIA.
With RTX Remix, the wiltOS Technologies team significantly improved texture quality, added a 3D effect to surfaces like cobblestone and brickwork, implemented ray tracing, significantly enhanced shadow quality, added DLSS 3.5 and Ray Reconstruction image scaling support, as well as implemented cooperative mode and slightly expanded mod creation possibilities.
A specially trained neural network scans the in-game environment and creates improved models with ray tracing support, but all the main work is done manually.
Thanks to the capabilities of modern AI and frame generation technologies, the game, now 20 years old, looks stunning and is almost on par with modern projects.
(P.S. Remasters created with RTX Remix usually have very high system requirements, so despite its age, the updated Dark Messiah of Might and Magic won't run on all computers).
