Apple Launches Instant Background Security Updates for iOS, iPadOS, and macOS
Apple has officially introduced a new update format—Background Security Improvement. It involves small interim security patches installed between full releases of the iOS, iPadOS, and macOS operating systems.
What is known
The company explains that the new mechanism allows vulnerabilities to be closed more quickly without waiting for major updates. These updates are primarily aimed at key system components—the Safari browser, WebKit engine, and system libraries that require regular minor fixes.
As the name suggests, Background Security Improvements are downloaded in the background. However, to complete the installation, the device needs to be restarted. The process itself takes significantly less time than a standard update: the reboot lasts less than a minute instead of the usual 5–10 minutes.
The first such update from Apple has already been released—it contains fixes for WebKit. The feature is available on devices with iOS 26.1, iPadOS 26.1, and macOS 26.1 and is activated by default.
Information about installed background updates can be checked in the "Privacy and Security" section in the device settings.
