Exodus: New Gameplay Trailer Unveils Mass Effect's Spiritual Successor with Time-Bending Worlds and Grappling Hooks
The ambitious space action-RPG Exodus is considered by many gamers to be the 'spiritual successor' to the legendary Mass Effect series. There are many reasons for this, and today Archetype Entertainment, founded by Bioware veterans, indicated that such a comparison is justified.
What is known
The developers released the first gameplay trailer for the early version of Exodus, in which the key combat mechanics of Mass Effect, especially its latest installment Andromeda, are easily recognizable. Players also participate in dynamic shootouts, use surrounding objects as cover, can rely on the help of several allies, and have a choice of several types of weapons and protagonist abilities. However, unlike Mass Effect, the Traveler in Exodus has a grappling hook, allowing him to quickly climb vertical surfaces and cross gaps between platforms. Clearly, a significant part of the location exploration will be built around this.
For those not in the know
One of the main features of Exodus will be the uneven passage of time on different planets. Players might leave a place for just a few days, only to return and discover that centuries have passed and the situation has fundamentally changed. In this respect, the game is reminiscent of the famous movie Interstellar.
The focus of the game will be on the Travelers — a group of people who explore space and encounter hostile forms of alien life. Their task is to find and retrieve artifacts from aliens that will help humanity survive on unfamiliar planets. It is noted that each artifact will have an impact on Exodus gameplay.
One of the main characters in Exodus is played by the famous actor Matthew McConaughey, while the script and foundations of the game universe are being created by the renowned Canadian screenwriter of Ukrainian origin Drew Karpyshyn — he is the one who created the global lore of Mass Effect.
When to expect
The release of Exodus is expected in 2026 on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC, and in the summer the developers promise to conduct an extensive gameplay showcase.
