Google's Gemini App for macOS: A Sneak Peek into Desktop Intelligence Revolution
Google is testing a separate Gemini app for macOS. Users who are not company employees have already been involved in the testing. This is reported by Bloomberg.
What is known
According to sources, the app functionally replicates the web version of Gemini: responding to queries, searching the internet, generating texts, images, and code. The key innovation may be the Desktop Intelligence feature. It allows AI to obtain context from open programs and everything displayed on the screen.
The app's code indicates that once this option is activated, Gemini "sees what you see" — specifically, it can analyze screen content and data from other apps for more accurate and personalized responses. Similar capabilities have already been implemented in the desktop versions of ChatGPT and Claude, and are partially available in the mobile Gemini.
It is not yet known whether Gemini will be able to not only analyze but also interact with programs — for example, perform actions within apps. Meanwhile, Google is already testing similar scenarios on smartphones.
The current testing of the app may indicate preparation for a public launch. Additionally, Gemini will become part of the Apple ecosystem — earlier the companies announced that Google's models will be used in future versions of Apple Intelligence and possibly in the updated Siri.
